For her Birthday, my daughter was given her very own sewing machine! Gramma could not have picked a nicer, more cool gift! K couldn't wait to use it but there was this that and the other that came up (not the least being my giantly messy sewing room) and we hadn't gotten around to doing a project until now. Birthday was in May...but better late than never!
K wanted to make a t-shirt for a friend's birthday gift. This was an ambitious project for a first timer so we did it together. K is a very talented artist and so she did the drawing. I didn't scan that because it was drawn on Wonder Under and subsequently ironed on and cut out. Invader Zim is one of K's favorite shows and her fave character from Zim is GIR a funny robot who sometimes dresses like a cute green dog.
K did some of the ironing on, cut out scraps and sewed the straight parts. I ironed all the littler bits together and sewed the curvy parts. I think it came out great and I think her friend will love it.
One of the things that is the very hardest about teaching someone a skill like sewing is standing back and allowing them to make mistakes. Especially when you know you can do something better and faster. But the point is not to get the project done or to do it perfectly, it's to let your student/kid have the experience of doing it and learning from those mistakes. K can't wait to do her next project and I am very proud of her!!
