I've mostly been putting things on Instagram. Lazy I know! This season Susky Theatre is doing Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. It's going to be set in Victorian England around 1910. Our hapless humans, Hermia, Helena, Demetrius, Mechanicals and Lysander will be lost in a garden hedge maze and tortured by Puck and other mischievous fairies.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned! In the meantime here is a link to my Instagram if you want to take a look at what I've been doing (and not posting here.) Sorry!<br />

Today I'm sharing this inexpensive and effective way I'm organizing my fabric stash. I have lots of fabric in lots of containers and when I want to use something I usually empty out the entire box to see what I have and then put it all back (or sometimes I don't and the clutter takes on a life of its own!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQaMVS43SNt8pT6gekd9SnZBdPnX0mmtSQZxaYxpOhP_Uo65Rif7UYJDKDlekKx6jUdz-OO98ox3FYJ1-roWCfZyimbIi96gXpeQuW0FDRt4Os0cxvLkA3Xkyro8Mnfi4_hdqKnuTJE10G/s1600/20171009_150539.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQaMVS43SNt8pT6gekd9SnZBdPnX0mmtSQZxaYxpOhP_Uo65Rif7UYJDKDlekKx6jUdz-OO98ox3FYJ1-roWCfZyimbIi96gXpeQuW0FDRt4Os0cxvLkA3Xkyro8Mnfi4_hdqKnuTJE10G/s320/20171009_150539.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here's what I did:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut a one inch or so snippet of every fabric in the container. Then I sprayed a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 card stock with spray adhesive and stuck them all on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You could also use glue or tape but I liked the spray adhesive because it's tacky. I could peel pieces off and move them around if needed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*UPDATE* The spray glue does Not stay sticky over time. I've had to go back and re-glue my swatches to the cardstock. Just use Elmer's or other, stronger glue that'll hold up or you'll get this: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja0hpHenI9bMZrqw1j2Mij6GrvEBcjT_JCudXrDTyPrJIipNIVHCZGhUw8nt8AUqr0dr3zXzkByrGxcXOpT6WscwjD86sqD22sOD-WExmFhJJE_cFkoI3edvwXYb_RePxl5jaL_nQ9DRQp/s1600/20171203_153339.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja0hpHenI9bMZrqw1j2Mij6GrvEBcjT_JCudXrDTyPrJIipNIVHCZGhUw8nt8AUqr0dr3zXzkByrGxcXOpT6WscwjD86sqD22sOD-WExmFhJJE_cFkoI3edvwXYb_RePxl5jaL_nQ9DRQp/s320/20171203_153339.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once I had all of my snippets on the card I slid it into a plastic notebook sleeve and attached it to my container.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now I can see what I have at a glance.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg96EOV9epbR96c8faHDe-eP7xL1thakBoNmNoBYPacO8Q1XrpfZkMx5rjIYdtsVl_fYxJN9va22yOfb92z1EptUiVo6YcNhmH_KOwAYkH7pq6E-UfAffNdgxSK55op5IWnw2EuyXRDuTP5/s1600/IMG_20171009_162047_091.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg96EOV9epbR96c8faHDe-eP7xL1thakBoNmNoBYPacO8Q1XrpfZkMx5rjIYdtsVl_fYxJN9va22yOfb92z1EptUiVo6YcNhmH_KOwAYkH7pq6E-UfAffNdgxSK55op5IWnw2EuyXRDuTP5/s320/IMG_20171009_162047_091.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="text-align: center;"> Notice the jumbled mess underneath? </span><span style="text-align: center;">I admit I thought about cropping that out. </span><span style="text-align: center;">Do you ever see someone's super tidy work space or fully completed organizational project and imagine that they totally have their act together and got it all done in one day? Well, I am definitely not one of those people! </span><span style="text-align: center;">I'm just going to work on it a little bit at a time in between other projects. I plan on doing a couple of boxes a week until it's done. </span>Periwinkle Paisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746575926852682354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6389993021080578838.post-70565754632461825462017-05-17T19:25:00.000-04:002017-05-17T19:25:23.546-04:00If everybody's off being an engineer, who's going to do my highlights?<div class="MsoNormal">

The field of cosmetology is
dominated by women, and judging by the bill at my last visit to the salon, it’s
a valid career choice. Being a stylist requires
professional certification or a two year Associate’s Degree. Successful hair stylists
have a skill set of above average interpersonal skills, manual dexterity, creativity
and (like engineering) an ability for three dimensional thinking. It’s true you
probably won’t be pulling a six figure salary like an investment banker, but
you can definitely support yourself and eventually open your own salon. </div>

We’ve been empowering girls with
this message since the early 80s. But
somewhere along the way, we stopped asking, “What <i>do</i> you want to be?” Ages ago
math and science were considered ‘too hard’ for girls, much better suited to
boys. That was and is complete BS. But in our efforts to ensure that young girls
aren’t being dissuaded from STEM careers, have we forgotten to keep asking, “What
do you <i>like</i> to do?” </div>

We hear over and over that women
can do the same jobs as men and that we should earn as much as men. (Yeah we should!) I think what’s not being heard enough though is that
traditionally female jobs are equally worthwhile if those are the interests
that our daughters wish to pursue. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So we wrapped up our production of Peter and the Starcatcher. Black Stash's jacket was (I thought) complete. I had the collar buttoned down. Note our poor mannequin with burn marks on the neck from when we used a heat gun to mold plastic armor.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3IsqxOTFcIs2IXyvx9IHpYUo7FkR58AgDwsygEPQ6TO6a8Bw-CQrDsOBkSqKCEhyphenhyphenekIUNAM631SDO2cYtCeVQ6FMQmwbE5V9v47PzlpztLVcshmMdvv-7x5Q0R8o2n8CiSC_NvPdlQzZX/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25285%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3IsqxOTFcIs2IXyvx9IHpYUo7FkR58AgDwsygEPQ6TO6a8Bw-CQrDsOBkSqKCEhyphenhyphenekIUNAM631SDO2cYtCeVQ6FMQmwbE5V9v47PzlpztLVcshmMdvv-7x5Q0R8o2n8CiSC_NvPdlQzZX/s320/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25285%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The lining was as in as it was going to go.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfPBrzVImzfvBOzOd-IhpWH3BJkgyrzh2CS8fKZ-GBPoQeIQl10u3smmeU0i8vEYvF7vYMiGZ0KPEzIjwUCe9DYjhkeCdKXiI-KyYRDqrzVJ_RRmcq6KsST4YPyeDJJR4uPOsaygWCMqxA/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25286%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfPBrzVImzfvBOzOd-IhpWH3BJkgyrzh2CS8fKZ-GBPoQeIQl10u3smmeU0i8vEYvF7vYMiGZ0KPEzIjwUCe9DYjhkeCdKXiI-KyYRDqrzVJ_RRmcq6KsST4YPyeDJJR4uPOsaygWCMqxA/s320/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25286%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Here is the side view, something has changed though, did you catch it?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl1HR-wCEmOtt9XJ9DLJ757pN7mllONc1D-MdkQ8YgdA_7_CI8Lilet-QcjR4eHh96jJMhUe5_SAfvbCWcTKHhWCfaQlEDl2SQF-7FLCxM3kvAgoJ0vgFO6ppSp8am5FvS82rWscyT3dQi/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25287%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl1HR-wCEmOtt9XJ9DLJ757pN7mllONc1D-MdkQ8YgdA_7_CI8Lilet-QcjR4eHh96jJMhUe5_SAfvbCWcTKHhWCfaQlEDl2SQF-7FLCxM3kvAgoJ0vgFO6ppSp8am5FvS82rWscyT3dQi/s320/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25287%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
And I added more navy fabric to the hem to bolster up the yellow and royal stripes at the bottom.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Back view with the mitered trim. It never did hang exactly right. If I do another jacket remake like this (and it is likely) I'll probably just line each piece of the coat individually.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfiuA2zPGVlFXbzoXm3SCo2K77JJCuC3K1051_oeUcCGpMvxCm7Iigy55tUu5247Dx1Z7FuYUDxSo4cnVmoNV3rE3VXSYoLeNcqi-jI9DWdRKK56rmweTeDFX0o72cc9CZoBnI90S5fcNR/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25284%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfiuA2zPGVlFXbzoXm3SCo2K77JJCuC3K1051_oeUcCGpMvxCm7Iigy55tUu5247Dx1Z7FuYUDxSo4cnVmoNV3rE3VXSYoLeNcqi-jI9DWdRKK56rmweTeDFX0o72cc9CZoBnI90S5fcNR/s320/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25284%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
The front view. I added gold buttons onto the end of each stripe.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyJcKGNJstop9AoSPKbeqtPHENGzanKRFgmrZpaF62QRAzG_VkHMlZbMT8KnOucHtL6TOFTSnEqQsP7gQUz4Y02a0GSeoFQsOQj2De7loFSVnx_vCWGzPfJgWgM4VjGJLUqn1k10vKMf0m/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25283%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyJcKGNJstop9AoSPKbeqtPHENGzanKRFgmrZpaF62QRAzG_VkHMlZbMT8KnOucHtL6TOFTSnEqQsP7gQUz4Y02a0GSeoFQsOQj2De7loFSVnx_vCWGzPfJgWgM4VjGJLUqn1k10vKMf0m/s320/BlackStashJacketstg4+%25283%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
So you might have noticed that the <a href="http://periwinkle-paisley.blogspot.com/2016/10/black-stash-jacket-part-2.html" target="_blank">cuffs are different</a> from when I first started.The reason for this is twofold: The style of cuffs I'd made were very floppy and the actors wearing the coat found them distracting. So I made a more fitted cuff with yellow and blue stripes to match the front of the coat. But secondly, and more importantly, the right cuff needed to be a trick sleeve.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
*SPOILER ALERT*</div>
<br />
It is very important as a costumer to pay attention to the script and I confess that when I began the jacket I had not read it all the way through At the end of the play, Black Stash has his hand cut off and he becomes dun-dun-DUN <a href="http://periwinkle-paisley.blogspot.com/search?q=captain+hook" target="_blank">Captain Hook.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh28fM9XR2HTWA7rXOI8L2sGbpk-d5L30yTkSWooSyQz5gmZdILkkW_K3fnJd90x_fc1QizJ0VjicbXm0m7bEdw1bx1hoPtCSt8t-LDz99WpJmgVK5cgQgzzI8v3aE43rtfpF1Nl4qAXOAo/s1600/BlackstashJacketstg5+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh28fM9XR2HTWA7rXOI8L2sGbpk-d5L30yTkSWooSyQz5gmZdILkkW_K3fnJd90x_fc1QizJ0VjicbXm0m7bEdw1bx1hoPtCSt8t-LDz99WpJmgVK5cgQgzzI8v3aE43rtfpF1Nl4qAXOAo/s320/BlackstashJacketstg5+%25281%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I had to rig the sleeve to come down and cover the actor's hand to make it look like it's been cut off, also it had to be quick and easy for her to do with one hand. I thought the red Velcro looked a bit like blood.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here you can see where one arm is longer than the other. So there you have it, how a plain old blue blazer becomes a tricked out pirate coat.Periwinkle Paisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746575926852682354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6389993021080578838.post-82735253502808752752016-11-27T12:19:00.001-05:002016-11-27T12:19:15.865-05:00Black Stash Jacket part 3 I added more yellow around the edge of the jacket to hide the raw edges of the yellow and blue bars.<br />

but the fabric had begun to fray very badly and it just was not working. So i seam ripped the whole mess out of there and started over. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I added new trim that went up and around in mitered corners, which were tricky since they are not all right angles. I had to just keep eyeballing it until it lined up nicely. I probably could have used a protractor but I didn't have one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOL0LElzURNVfEaYq8GQDPXwi1BRf04o02lOE0A9knV0utJV4LleV8zqImXy0ZkrYHoGdsmJdh9PezkqmVwR2VN5kJEUvaAEl2S0QO3-M7YFAG2jq65AVwJ5SVr-7ij9ieRkJi2dx6sq1c/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg3+%25283%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOL0LElzURNVfEaYq8GQDPXwi1BRf04o02lOE0A9knV0utJV4LleV8zqImXy0ZkrYHoGdsmJdh9PezkqmVwR2VN5kJEUvaAEl2S0QO3-M7YFAG2jq65AVwJ5SVr-7ij9ieRkJi2dx6sq1c/s320/BlackStashJacketstg3+%25283%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
The next part was adding lining. I used old lining from a bathrobe we had in stock. I would not recommend this as it didn't line up exactly and was very fiddly to attach.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2VThFACJjlVVsPFtd6beD2EW_gQdLin4hhN0cCL2YdO5XqRJ8s3PsveFAvXAXfRlnnNZHAZ4CtpHZ53vQ1SUS2ISK4oQ2M1BHPR60zdaZtRkgKJuhj_Y8dYFgyOKfLIxWAUHMfdYHAzuJ/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg3+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2VThFACJjlVVsPFtd6beD2EW_gQdLin4hhN0cCL2YdO5XqRJ8s3PsveFAvXAXfRlnnNZHAZ4CtpHZ53vQ1SUS2ISK4oQ2M1BHPR60zdaZtRkgKJuhj_Y8dYFgyOKfLIxWAUHMfdYHAzuJ/s320/BlackStashJacketstg3+%25282%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
I got it there in the end but if I'd known it was going to be so annoying I would have just partially lined the front where the appliqued bars are.<br />

I cut the front of the blue blazer using <a href="http://www.tor.com/2009/10/29/how-to-convert-an-ordinary-suit-coat-into-a-tail-coat/" target="_blank">this tutorial.</a> Then I added navy blue bias tape to the edges. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I want the jacket to have a military feel to it without copying any actual military uniform. Originally, I was only going to have just these three bars on the front (anyone know the name of this type of embellishment?) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJyqQouSuru7kxKZ8H4yeIQM10Gja0oBYLv_y6vBtMaCr6cUKwrwUEATdrPG03sO1Lk_6RfrkMgrUlcDRPsYjm3gqLL_Cqh1wjT3Y54lM5fIdF13lLRTdkyXOp3DbOCC4DVsGwzgbZjGw-/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25283%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJyqQouSuru7kxKZ8H4yeIQM10Gja0oBYLv_y6vBtMaCr6cUKwrwUEATdrPG03sO1Lk_6RfrkMgrUlcDRPsYjm3gqLL_Cqh1wjT3Y54lM5fIdF13lLRTdkyXOp3DbOCC4DVsGwzgbZjGw-/s320/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25283%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But I it looked incomplete so I added more bars that diminish in size.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge3P5fazWzeX3D1pop8krcyfxQpKRp13ydYtS80CDHAA-l4lVN63p7KG_JTfBfPGl9kzUTd6MFaTyTDUjnrsbRw5_A7Sbk6OpoVPJzaZeOB08Ircel2DFgGrZqJ6RUqPzvtPWIbYDDEUs0/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25284%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge3P5fazWzeX3D1pop8krcyfxQpKRp13ydYtS80CDHAA-l4lVN63p7KG_JTfBfPGl9kzUTd6MFaTyTDUjnrsbRw5_A7Sbk6OpoVPJzaZeOB08Ircel2DFgGrZqJ6RUqPzvtPWIbYDDEUs0/s320/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25284%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I added royal blue, satin ribbon down the center of each yellow bar so it wouldn't look so blocky, then satin stitched around the raw edges. This yellow polyester material frays like crazy! Worse than costume satin!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8FBrGDTXeqcrVv99dRHyJnqVpdeyjFlG9gNAUpMNlLNm8ezHcfEPwjXFTSLUiRD7XrHpLiiN6SrJ2-mauLkD9bLJxQIRR029wPcYzihox7J1_pO_Dm9hGLNhjaUrAhTSOkSufdH_DGARt/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25285%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8FBrGDTXeqcrVv99dRHyJnqVpdeyjFlG9gNAUpMNlLNm8ezHcfEPwjXFTSLUiRD7XrHpLiiN6SrJ2-mauLkD9bLJxQIRR029wPcYzihox7J1_pO_Dm9hGLNhjaUrAhTSOkSufdH_DGARt/s320/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25285%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKAH4WqTL9CD2AwmFFdILjXKC_qVIT2lteFDCBZvv3sNxxWnjhyphenhyphen62SYHBrC4Hbe0be2_PIND9n_2sK7YRhCzIWxVfSmYF8y58on7oiky7tD_ZdoVATPm26WkDeYOkdVI355sqT43Vht1JB/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25287%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKAH4WqTL9CD2AwmFFdILjXKC_qVIT2lteFDCBZvv3sNxxWnjhyphenhyphen62SYHBrC4Hbe0be2_PIND9n_2sK7YRhCzIWxVfSmYF8y58on7oiky7tD_ZdoVATPm26WkDeYOkdVI355sqT43Vht1JB/s320/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25287%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I designed a cuff that echoes the design elements of the yellow and blue bars. Again, I didn't want to copy any <i>particular</i> military uniform so I avoided using stripes that designate rank. We want this play and its costumes to feel as though children are playing out the story using things they might have found in an attic or grandparents closet or the like. A kid might find a fancy jacket and think it looks military enough.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4LqkaO1N9jOZygSpOx53A5oiofzUMRMmGYZAaxcacpQie1rLuOiwoXF_t9Gh2a57_XdgE3qmknU3FLB_OAbr05ygL_hkWiwCCVee_Z4J8rMAm7VLoEQJsf7DljUiY5vEDE6lKX0XYx-18/s1600/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25286%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4LqkaO1N9jOZygSpOx53A5oiofzUMRMmGYZAaxcacpQie1rLuOiwoXF_t9Gh2a57_XdgE3qmknU3FLB_OAbr05ygL_hkWiwCCVee_Z4J8rMAm7VLoEQJsf7DljUiY5vEDE6lKX0XYx-18/s320/BlackStashJacketstg2+%25286%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The cuffs are only pinned on because I need the two actors who will be wearing the jacket to try it on. Two characters wear the jacket: First, Lord Astor, who is captain of a secret mission to find 'star stuff.' One of the reasons that I didn't want to use British Military style is because his mission is top secret and unofficial so the British Navy would not want it known they're involved. The second character is Black Stash who steals the jacket from Lord Astor.</div>

<a href="http://peterandthestarcatcher.com/" target="_blank">Peter and the Starcatcher</a> is a play that speculates about the origin of Peter Pan and Neverland. The play is based on the books written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. I have not read them yet but I plan to soon. One of the characters the figures prominently in these stories is a pirate called Black Stash (for his formidable facial hair.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am going to be building this jacket for both the Black Stash character and another character named Lord Astor (from whom it is stolen.) One of the more common things we do in our costume shop is repurpose or upcycle old clothes. I am starting with a man's navy blue blazer as the foundation for Black Stash's coat.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided that I would go with a series of graduated bars with pointed ends. I've folded under where I'm planning to cut and laid the cardboard pattern pieces along the edge to see what it may look like.</div>

"I'm bustin up my brains for the words..." Moonage Daydream, David Bowie</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the early 80s David Bowie was like my life. He was the reason I dyed my hair, wore black lipstick and created some of my earliest (and bizarre) costumes. Bowie was like the patron saint of the beautiful and strange and as an artist, as a creative person he was, for me, like a god. I think he was the second greatest influence in my life as an artist, the first being my Mom. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
Over the years I've drifted in my interests in actors or art or music but he was always there in the back of my head. Musicians that I liked and artists that I admired almost always listed Bowie as an influence of theirs. He had this amazing ability to figure out what was going to be cool and do it before anyone else even got an inkling. </div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first LP I ever owned was Station to Station. When CDs became the next thing I purposely bought Station to Station again. When iTunes came out I think 'Let's Dance' was the first song I downloaded. Or it may have been 'Suffragette City' I remember holding my cassette recorder up to the radio speaker, my finger hovering at the ready over the record button to tape that song. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When a famous person dies people say trite things like: "His light has gone from the world" This is not so with David Bowie his light will shine even brighter now. He was the first, the coolest of the cool. The one who came before and switched it all on for everybody else.</div>

This year's production is going to be very exciting! We are putting on Mary Poppins and it should be a challenge for me. Already, I have had to alter a pattern. I sewed a muslin of one of Mary Poppins' coats and then fitted it to the actress playing her. (With a little direction from my assistant there in the lower right.)</div>

A red coat, <a href="http://periwinkle-paisley.blogspot.com/2013/10/hooks-red-coat-is-done.html" target="_blank">haven't we seen something like this before</a>? So far, this coat that she'll be wearing in "Step In Time" is going together without problems. The trickiest bit was the set in pockets. The fabric I am using is a poly-cotton gabardine and it has a very nice hand and drapes well. At least one of Mary's coats is going to have to be fitted specially for a flying harness which will be a totally new thing that I've not done before. The Fall Play was one called The 39 Steps and it was great fun. I am going to post the backstory of all of that once I get my pictures on to this laptop. My camera and my laptop both have been acting up and I haven't been able to post without a great deal of frustration so I didn't. I am hoping to fix that in time to start posting for our next production, Mary Poppins! This is going to be a huge show with tons of costumes, including constructing costumes that hide a flying harness which is something I have never tackled before. Always fun to push yourself to do a new thing, right? Stay tuned, more to come!Periwinkle Paisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746575926852682354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6389993021080578838.post-17912280612754584572014-09-01T10:17:00.001-04:002014-09-01T10:17:11.705-04:00Hello Again<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I didn't plan on taking the summer off from blogging, I just sort of did. But now the school year has started up and I'm slowly getting back into the groove of a creative routine once more. A new theatre season is beginning with some exciting new costumes to plan and create so I am looking very forward to that. Stay tuned!<br />
<br />
Speaking of the new theatre season, I'm going to take a minute to hawk my double-feature coloring book. <br />

It's a combination of my Mandala Magic and Color Me Paisley coloring books. I'm selling them on Etsy to raise money so that our little theatre can put on Mary Poppins with proper flying! All proceeds from the double coloring book (minus Etsy's listing fees) will go to the theatre fundraising effort. Buy one and tell your friends! <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Slenderman drawn by K (when she probably should've been working.)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
By now I am sure that you've heard of the genuinely scary story of the two girls that lured their friend into the woods and attempted to murder her. I'm sure you've heard the name of Slenderman bandied around on the news shows as the bizarre reason for their horrifying actions. You may have even seen some of these news shows interviewing concerned parents expressing shock that children as young as Kindergarten age know who Slenderman is (well, duh!) and telling parents they should outright ban their child from ever visiting the website <a href="http://www.creepypasta.com/" target="_blank">Creepy Pasta</a> and websites like it. <br />
<br />
This may shock some of you but I am not going to do that. But let me back up a bit.<br />
<br />
A couple of months ago I got a phone call from the school guidance counselor regarding K. A disturbing drawing had been found on the floor in the hall at school. This drawing was of a goth-ish, manga-ish character who liked knives or blood or both --the details are somewhat sketchy (yeah, pun intended) because I never saw the actual drawing. I do know there were no knives or blood in the drawing itself. She told me the drawing had been created by an un-named artist and K had told the teacher who had drawn it. The school never wants to tell you who <em>else</em> is involved when your kid's behavior is being scrutinized, but I knew immediately who the artist was. K and her best friend, Josie* are both artists are always collaborating and comparing their work. K wasn't being a tattle tale or trying to get her friend into trouble. She is quite proud of her friend's art skills and saw no reason not to give credit where it was due. <br />
<br />
In interviewing both K and her friend, the counselor discovered that the idea for this artwork had come from visiting Creepy Pasta. She said I should check out this site. She said it had a dark theme, a scary vibe and she found it disturbing. I want to make it clear that I appreciate the guidance counselor's concern and attention to this. I'm glad she wanted me to be aware of K's activity online (which I was and am.) I didn't take her phone call lightly and I take it even more seriously after hearing this news story. I thanked her and I made good on my promise to speak to K about it.<br />
<br />
With all of that being said, I am not concerned about Creepy Pasta or its influence on K. I didn't then, nor am I now banning her from visiting Creepy Pasta. I spoke with Josie's Mom and she was on the same page (yeah, another art pun, sorry) as I am. Yes, I know, 'knives and blood' sounds creepy. But is it any worse than creepy <a href="http://www.americanfolklore.net/campfire.html" target="_blank">stories we used to tell each other at sleepovers</a> like "The Hook" or playing with Ouija Boards? The reason I'm not concerned is this: I know my kid. This is a girl who cries when her brother kills a bug instead of taking it outside. This is a girl who conducts funerals for dead goldfish and hermit crabs and insists on custom made <strike>origami boxes</strike> coffins and mandatory paying of respects from all family members. K's own depictions of Slenderman are more cute than terrifying. K and her friends are horror dilettantes nothing more.<br />
<br />
The lesson to be learned from this cautionary tale is not that we should ban our children from creepy-story websites. This is the same old argument that "violent video games cause violence" wrapped up in a newer package. The lesson to be learned is to be vigilant, be nosy, be aware, be up in their business. Ask questions about their interests. Ask questions about their friends. Ask questions about what they believe, even silly things like belief in ghosts and monsters. Don't stop asking questions even when you're getting eye rolls and sighs. Be willing to <em>immediately drop everything</em> (and I mean immediately, like even if your hands are full of raw chicken juice or whatever) and listen when your kid wants to talk about something. I really mean that last one, it really pays off. <br />
<br />
I won't be so arrogant to say that I have perfect insight into everything K thinks or does but I know her heart. I know she can separate fiction and reality. As important I know her friends. I know her friends' parents and what sort of people they are. I would be interested to know what these girls' parents, either the perpetrator's or the victim's, saw any signs, got any vibes, discounted any off feelings. I am not judging them. Who would ever predict their 11 year old daughters to be into a thrill-kill? Who would expect their child to barely make it back alive from a sleepover? No one could guess at such a thing. I think that their hindsight could be beneficial to other parents but I would understand if they are too shocked to share it.<br />
<br />
I talked to K about this news story, not surprisingly she'd already heard about it at school when it came out. I accurately predicted that she would call those girls totally crazy and not very smart to believe in a made up character like Slenderman. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Back in the 50s, they were called story skirts or just circle skirts. Some people will even call every circle skirt that has an appliqued design a poodle skirt whether the design is a poodle or something else. The most famous one is, of course the poodle, originally designed by <a href="http://glamourdaze.com/2012/07/the-1950s-circle-skirt-phenomenon.html" target="_blank">Juli Lynne Charlot</a>. The reason that the circle skirt became a huge trend, because you <em>didn't</em> buy them in a store, you made your own! The only limit on the design was your imagination.* </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Each appliqued design is meant to tell a simple story, such as, I took my poodle for a walk. The stories in the skirts above and below come from the song "Telephone Hour." The purple skirt on the left features a humming bird, as in, "What's the word, humming bird?" The orange and black phones are pretty self explanatory. These two actresses sang across stage to each other, "Hi Nancy!" "Hi, Alice!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The story in this skirt is from the line, "What's the tale, Nightingale?" I know that nightingales are not red but I used poetic license. This skirt was my very favorite. It looked amazing when the dancer wearing it would twirl; it really seemed like the birds were flying. The black and white was Pam's idea since we couldn't settle on which color to use. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaS-mnpJCZshoComD_NTzQ3pMbMEtV_QG-_hIfdN04ajEa1dav3ACHI0oYPqnc3Zl4M14gQFBPYeH1x6nKfv_IxFQP2KtCkWeTbfTFp-rFWyqYz-E7klbLjY1M2SHsSJDTi_1NTbYxEH7j/s1600/costumessheepskirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaS-mnpJCZshoComD_NTzQ3pMbMEtV_QG-_hIfdN04ajEa1dav3ACHI0oYPqnc3Zl4M14gQFBPYeH1x6nKfv_IxFQP2KtCkWeTbfTFp-rFWyqYz-E7klbLjY1M2SHsSJDTi_1NTbYxEH7j/s1600/costumessheepskirt.jpg" height="320" width="316" /></a></div>
The last skirt I made was the counting sheep skirt. The story is that it was about 2 a.m., opening night was the next day (or that technically that evening) and I was really tired when I made it!<br />
<br />
A circle skirt is an easy project for a beginner, each skirt is 360 degrees around. (The girls wearing them loved twirling around.) In order to make one, you need a square of fabric that is 72" x 72". The green skirt with the orange phone was made out of a shower curtain that happened to be exactly that size! We had a huge roll of wide, black elastic for each of the waistbands and pretty much every waistband was put on by Taylor our student crew member. She had a real knack for pinning and sewing them on!<br />
<br />
*It turns out that, just like any trend that becomes wildly popular, circle skirts were eventually sold in stores. Read more about it here <a href="http://thevintagetraveler.wordpress.com/2012/04/23/the-1950s-circle-skirt/" target="_blank">http://thevintagetraveler.wordpress.com/2012/04/23/the-1950s-circle-skirt/</a> <br />

All told, Costume Crew made 15 fanclub outfits in all. That's 15 jackets, 15 <a href="http://periwinkle-paisley.blogspot.com/2014/02/local-paper-article.html" target="_blank">Conrad Birdie Fan Club appliques</a> on each jacket, 15 skirts and 15 guitars and 60 notes for each skirt. This was definitely a group effort! We were all sick of them by the time opening night came around but... </div>

During tech week of Bye Bye Birdie, I was tired. After Bye Bye Birdie was over, I was tired. After I got over being tired, my laptop had some I-don't-wanna-turn-on-anymore issues that turned out to be a faulty adapter. Now, 20 days later, I feel less tired and I have a new adapter. So. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://periwinkle-paisley.blogspot.com/2014/03/conrads-jacket.html" target="_blank">Conrad Birdie's gold jacket.</a> was the last costume I posted.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO6FUqxPgvecqi6Mf6Naq418gBRrOL0Zcm5uEsxYLDlLEascQaDDQJjSwym76H8gHLnaCaqlFQ6V_ZRO4qvpEFuXMgCBsvlffePXg5M1-e637a4okyyzWzZu8lapAL7RCj-B4w79NYJizR/s1600/costumesconradsgoldsuit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO6FUqxPgvecqi6Mf6Naq418gBRrOL0Zcm5uEsxYLDlLEascQaDDQJjSwym76H8gHLnaCaqlFQ6V_ZRO4qvpEFuXMgCBsvlffePXg5M1-e637a4okyyzWzZu8lapAL7RCj-B4w79NYJizR/s1600/costumesconradsgoldsuit.jpg" height="280" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I added some over-the-top, <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=michael+jackson+epaulettes&hl=en&site=webhp&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=5u5XU5fMN-K52AWu24G4AQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=643#imgdii=_" target="_blank">Michael Jackson looking</a>, sequined epaulettes. These were made with hot glue, cardboard, felt, lame', star appliques, sequins and some chunky gold curtain trim. I also added gold gimp, gold star appliques and gold buttons to the jacket just to pimp it up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pants are mustard yellow Dockers to which I added some gold paint and spray on glitter. Interestingly, neither of these embellishments showed up one bit on stage, all those lights on him but nary a twinkle. Take a pick with my crappy camera and they shimmer like they're sprinkled with fairy dust. Go figure. The gold shirt, black boots and belt we had in stock from the costume shop.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
More tomorrow!<br />

One of the great things about working in a costume shop is that we have many things in stock to use but they are not all ready to wear. We're creating costumes for high school students and by nature they are not done growing yet. The shoulders and torso are smaller for most young men, they fill out as they keep growing, but their arms are long same as an adult's arms would be. Lanky is the word that comes to mind. Men's jackets that are longer are also going to be larger in all elements of the jacket. Men's jackets that are smaller are, conversely, small all the way around, fine for fitting shoulders and torso, but you end up with stubby sleeves. The easiest alteration to do is to lengthen the sleeve. <br />
<br />
This sounds daunting but it's really not. You start by removing all the buttons, then pick the lining away from the sleeve hem, press out your 'bonus' fabric, re-hem and reattach the buttons. Time consuming yes, but not difficult. Plus, you get to see how the garment is made. The other good news about costumes is that you don't have to be a Saville Row tailor to get the job done either.Periwinkle Paisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746575926852682354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6389993021080578838.post-41733978708306922402014-03-04T13:17:00.001-05:002014-03-04T13:17:24.271-05:00Conrad's Jacket<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I started this a week ago.This is going to be the gold Elvis-ish jacket that Conrad Birdie wears on the <a href="http://www.edsullivan.com/" target="_blank">Ed Sullivan</a> show. Since Birdie is supposed to be going into the military the 'feel' of the outfit is supposed to be military in nature. I'm using a McCall's uniform pattern but I shortened it at the waist to make it more American in style and also because I was running out of fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZuep0rVzfLkB8js8f-s26G7jcwOjlL2sBqk34XVYw4hfFoOOrvh0ANWvQJ-6ZIuOhzNcNteuH-lKPLS0mPrZGswGt_YsXmjmAECchpFdaMW4n1faGDy2I2NEc8Bm95CvMKD_UUsB169TZ/s1600/Conrad'sJacket+(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZuep0rVzfLkB8js8f-s26G7jcwOjlL2sBqk34XVYw4hfFoOOrvh0ANWvQJ-6ZIuOhzNcNteuH-lKPLS0mPrZGswGt_YsXmjmAECchpFdaMW4n1faGDy2I2NEc8Bm95CvMKD_UUsB169TZ/s1600/Conrad'sJacket+(1).JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I was going to do a step by step pictorial of making this coat but then people had my camera, then I forgot it one day and before I could get around to doing in-progress pix of its construction it was pretty much done. All that is left to do is have the actor try it on and then attach the rest of the lining.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUI6FAz_VpaToYBmHX352okEfbaiDYcRgIrW4Z4RzkdAL9sxqQgf_ImRI3rSqhTS3ML7ZShbHeYUcPY0qKClGYi1rAhrw3K3aRuB2OOLVgdiGJAdE6YfjfRbvM8p2tl2YcATr1uRbWTiEL/s1600/Conrad'sJacket+(3).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUI6FAz_VpaToYBmHX352okEfbaiDYcRgIrW4Z4RzkdAL9sxqQgf_ImRI3rSqhTS3ML7ZShbHeYUcPY0qKClGYi1rAhrw3K3aRuB2OOLVgdiGJAdE6YfjfRbvM8p2tl2YcATr1uRbWTiEL/s1600/Conrad'sJacket+(3).JPG" height="320" width="256" /></a></div>
We wanted the jacket to have an overstated 'Hollywood' feel so we chose a shiny (but not metallic) yellow-gold stripe. There are five gold chevrons on the sleeves so he looks Rock-Star important but at the same time does not denote any real rank. The pockets were added afterwards and they and the collar were trimmed with gold sequined gimp. I had already started putting in the lining and it was a big pain to sew the pockets on underneath. I don't recommend it! Conrad is going to have some gold lame pants that will have a stripe going down each leg made of the jacket fabric.Periwinkle Paisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746575926852682354noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6389993021080578838.post-47536790632760855842014-02-17T09:12:00.001-05:002014-02-17T09:12:20.882-05:00Local Paper Article<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Our local paper, <a href="http://www.flipsidepa.com/fsfunforall/ci_25106467/york-and-adams-county-high-school-stages-come" target="_blank">The York Daily Record</a>, did a feature piece on our preparations for Bye Bye Birdie. If you look you can find me ironing there in the background. Those are my own personal scissors and pins! Lame that I'm excited about that but I am.<br />
<br />
It's really cool that they did a piece on the costume crew. Usually the focus is on actors so it's nice to get a nod.<br />

Costume Shop is open and ready for business. I think we are going for a Glee sort of feeling with bright bits of color all over. One of my current obsessions: Blaine and his yellow pants. Do you know that it's darn near impossible to find mens' pants (in any colors other than blue, tan or black) anywhere for under $50?<br />

<strong>As Promised!</strong></div>
<br />
I did take photos but cast photographer, <a href="http://nancyslattery.smugmug.com/" target="_blank">Nancy Slattery</a>, kindly gave me permission to post her photos of the cast in their costumes here. Since her pix were a lot better, action shots and the had the added bonus of a non-cluttery costume shop background in each it was a no brainer which to use. Click the link to see more of the play pix. So without further ado these are ALL of the costumes I made or helped make:<br />

There's going to be a post-game wrap up complete with pix, I promise! I've just been too swamped with costuming to blog. <br />
<br />
To date I have made:<br />
Captain Hook: Fully lined swing coat, vest, 2 pairs lined pants, jabot and repurposed shirt with frilly lace<br />
Mr. Smee (s): 2 coats, 2 hats, 2 pairs pants<br />
Of 6 Mermaids: I made about 4 of their tails, 5 bikini tops, 5 seaweedy hair falls<br />
Mrs. Darling: Repurposed dress<br />
Like Eleventy-Two pirate and lost boy hats and sashes.'<br />
<br />
Plus there's pulling out stock items to build costumes for all the extras which is actually more fun than it sounds AND all of the last minute repairs, details and accessorizing. As it turns out, the velvet panne' that I used for the mermaid skirt is NOT 4-way stretch. When I had the actress try it on last night she couldn't get it up past her hips. I suggested that it was upside down (it could happen) but no. She didn't like that, understandably. It was more like wishful thinking that I hadn't spent the day sewing a bunch of sequins (onto a now unusable tail) than lack of confidence in her ability to pull on a skirt. <br />
<br />
When sewing stretch fabrics into a garment that will be skin tight, it's important to test the amount of stretch you have to work with. Pam had tested one of the other fabrics and I wrongly assumed that this panne' had the same properties. The other fabrics <em>are</em> 4-way (you can be sure I've now tested them!) and they have six more inches of give than the velvet panne'. Fortunately there's a lot of the panne' left so I was able to cut another tail adding six inches to the original measurement around the hips. I had her try it on and it fit fine.
